Kaplan is located in Vermilion Parish which boasts being "The most Cajun place on Earth".  The parish was named after the orange, red sunsets whose hue resembles mercuric sulfide (the common ore of mercury) and is the root of the Portuguese word for the color red (just like the Spanish word Colorado).  Vermilion is the largest county-like section in Louisiana and 23.7 percent of its area is water.  When I was a land surveyor in Louisiana, I charted parts of the parish that had been previously surveyed only from the air with calibrated photographic equipment.  I often watched the Sun as it painted the sky and it never failed to provide an amazing palette briefly before dark.  Are you a sunrise or sunset person?
