A good fence can instill confidence where fear should prevail.  A few strands of wire and a couple of well placed wooden posts can keep harm from falling on the innocent, maintain harmony between neighbors, and restrict movement across boundaries.  Each side of the fence feels safe and protected from the other, and often it is a false sense of security.  Fences are the reason we can coexist with those who differ from us since we can return to our side of the fence when the need arises.  Other people’s circumstances often seem more desirable than our own but in reality we should strive to improve what's on our side of the fence.  Is the grass greener from where you stand?
